WHAT SIZE METAL GARAGE DO I NEED?

7/3/2026

The right metal garage size depends on what you want to store now and what you might need in the future. A little extra space often makes parking, opening doors, and working around vehicles much easier.
Here's a general guide:
Garage SizeBest For12×20 ft                  One compact car and limited storage
18×20 ft                 One full-size vehicle with room for tools or shelves
20×20 ft                 Two small to midsize vehicles
24×24 ft                 Two vehicles with some storage or workspace
24×30 ft                 Two vehicles plus a workshop or lawn equipment
30×40 ft                 Multiple vehicles, RVs, boats, or a large workshopSome additional considerations:
  • Vehicle dimensions: Measure the length, width, and height of your vehicles, including mirrors and roof racks.
  • Door clearance: Plan for enough room to comfortably open doors and walk around the vehicle.
  • Storage: Shelving, bicycles, lawn equipment, and seasonal items can require several extra feet.
  • Workshop space: If you'll use the garage for woodworking, mechanics, or hobbies, allow additional floor space.
  • Future needs: If you expect to buy another vehicle, ATV, boat, or riding mower, sizing up now is usually more cost-effective than adding on later.
Common recommendations
  • One vehicle: 18×20 or 20×24 feet.
  • Two vehicles: 24×24 or 24×30 feet.
  • Truck or SUV: At least 24 feet deep is often more comfortable.
  • RV or motorhome: Typically 14–16 feet tall with a depth of 40–50 feet or more, depending on the RV.
If you tell me:
  • how many vehicles you have,
  • their makes/models (or approximate sizes),
  • whether you need storage or a workshop,
  • and your available building site dimensions,

I can recommend an ideal garage size and door configuration.
